Kenneth Chen의 중국불교사 불교용어
Kenneth Chen이라는 Chinese American 불교학자가 쓴 라는 책이 있습니다. 우리나라에선 "중국불교"란 제목으로 민족사에서 두권으로 번역출간되었습니다.
책을 보다가 불교 용어 정리에 보탬이 될까 하여 두서없이나마 정리하였습니다. 용어집 새로 발간하거나 증보할 때 잘 분류하여 활용했으면 좋겠습니다. 번역은 박 해당님이 하셨는데, 번역이 잘 되어 있어서 용어를 수집하기가 너무 좋았습니다. 좋은 불교용어 한영사전을 만들기 위해선 기존의 번역된 자료들을 영문과 비교검토하는 일이 필요할 것입니다.
사실 불교 용어라는 것이 한계를 긋기가 모호한 점이 있는데요, 중국 고서의 제목, 지명, 인명, 사찰명 등도 포함을 시킬 것인지. 만일 포함시킨다면 중국발음의 알파벳 음사를 해야 할 것같고요, 그러자면 우린 원문으로는 아는 말이 영문으로 옮겼을 때 더 모르게 되는 결과가 초래됩니다. 산스크리트어도 그렇고요. 또한 어떤 용어들은 법이나 철학 등에서 사용되는 용어들이면서도, 다시 말해 불교용어가 아니면서도 불교사와의 접합지점에서 사용된 것들이 있는데, 이런 것들도 포함해야 하는지 아닌지 등등의 복잡한 문제들은 꾸준히 고민하며 올바른 결정을 내리고 시행해야 하겠습니다.
